Your Duke Identity

OIT Identity Management maintains a centralized record of information about you to support Duke services.  This record includes:

  • Information you provide about how you wish to be identified in Duke systems, such as your preferred/chosen name or personal pronouns, and
  • Information that a Duke department has provided on your behalf to support access decisions, such as your student status or hire date.

Sources for your identity record depend on your personal relationship(s) to Duke, and may change over time.  For example, most student identity information is sourced from DukeHub, and after graduation, the record is updated from the Duke Alumni Network.

Duke services should obtain user information from OIT Identity Management rather than a specific source of record to ensure consistency of personal information.

Updating Your Information

It can be daunting to change your name or other personal information across many Duke systems and services.  The following steps will help:

Update Identity Management

You may review and update your central identity record through Account Self-Service.  This site will guide you on updates for information that feeds the Duke Internal Directory and thousands of integrated sites and services used by the Duke community.

Review and Update Source Systems

If updating Identity Management does not resolve your concern, please review the Identity Sources Report we offer in Account Self-Service.  Through this report, you will see basic information provided about you by Duke's most prominent sources of person information, along with links to update a specific system containing information you wish to change.

Make a referral to Identity Management

If you've taken the steps above and are still experiencing problems with outdated or otherwise incorrect identity information please help us make Duke better by referring the department responsible for the service using incorrect information to Identity Management.  This website is a good starting point for learning about how to get access to up-to-date user information.
